PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Subsidy Structure for Rooftop Solar

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government scheme that aims to promote the adoption of rooftop solar power in India by providing financial assistance to residential households to install solar power plants on their rooftops. The subsidy amount you receive is based on the capacity of the solar power plant you install, which in turn is determined by your average monthly electricity consumption. The scheme offers a tiered subsidy structure to make rooftop solar power more affordable for a wider range of households.

Subsidy for Residential Households

  • Rs. 30,000 per kW up to 2 kW
  • Rs. 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW
  • Total subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW capped at Rs. 78,000

The amount of subsidy you can avail of depends on your average monthly electricity consumption. The image provides a table that illustrates the recommended capacity based on consumption:

  • Average Monthly Electricity Consumption (units) Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant Capacity
  • 0-150 1-2 kW
  • 150-300 2-3 kW
  • 300 Above 3 kW

Subsidy for Group Housing Societies/Resident Welfare Associations (GHS/RWA)

  • Rs. 18,000 per kW for common facilities, including EV charging, up to 500 kW capacity (@3 kW per house) with the upper limit being inclusive of individual rooftop plants installed by individual residents in the GHS/RWA

    • 1. Usually you should co sider benchmark cost for solar installation which is currently 45-50 thousand depending on region and vendor quality. (GOI has kept it amongst the discretion of consumer and vendor to decide a common rate).
      2. Subsidy from govt is 30 thousand for each kw capacity so for your case you will get back this amount as subsidy.
      3. Bank loan not required if you can pay the fees upfront.
      4. You can get this installed at elevated as well as rooftop. If you get this installed at roof top it should have a height of two feet from floor height and if installing on elevated struxture then its height should be 8 feet minimum from floor.
